Seasonal Readings at Government House
Maureen Haddock was extremely
honoured when a selection from her
book Get a bigger Wagon was chosen
by the Seasonal Readings jury panel
to be performed at Government House
on December 14, 2005. Her Honour Dr.
Lynda Haverstock, lieutenant Governor
of Saskatchewan and His Honour Mr.
Harley Olsen hosted the Seasonal
Readings to celebrate the successful
conclusion of the Libraries and Authors
Centennial Tour. The tour was the result
of a partnership between the Lieutenant
Governor, the Saskatchewan Writers
Guild and the Saskatchewan Library
Association. During this Centennial year
twenty-eight authors visited thirty-seven
libraries, showcasing Saskatchewan’s
talented writers and highlighting the vital
role of libraries.
The warmth and charm of Government
House on the evening of the Seasonal
Readings was in sharp contrast to the snow and ice
outside. Mr. Gary Hyland was a warm and witty Master
of Ceremonies. Her Honour, the Honourable Dr. Lynda
Haverstock, enlightened those in attendance as she spoke
about the vibrant cultural history we have in Saskatchewan.
Talented young actors from the Theatre Department at the
University of Regina read excerpts from the writings of seven
Saskatchewan authors. The variety of selections presented,
provided guests with an opportunity to laugh and shed a tear
while making mental notes about books they might like to
read.
After the performances, guests were invited to a reception
in the Henry Newlands Ballroom. The elegance of this
room provided a wonderful setting for conversation and
refreshments. Many guests toured the residential portion of
the house, marveling at the wonderful antique furnishings, the
art and the Christmas décor while experiencing a glimpse into
life at Government House as it must have been, long ago.
This memorable evening was charming in every way.
